- Microsoft Word 365 Mac Insert New Headings 2016
2015-6-2 I am editing a long document in Word 2010. My problem is that new headings I have entered are not appearing in the Navigation Pane. Some old headings continue to appear, but as I have deleted some headings to replace them with new arrangements of text, the new headings that I create are not appearing in the Navigation pane.
-->Microsoft Word can create a table of contents that can be instantly updated to reflect additions and changes in your document. This table of contents acts as both a guide and navigation tool that enables readers to quickly find the information they need. The easiest way to build and maintain a table of contents is by using Styles. Create headers or footers. In a Word document, press F6 repeatedly until you land on a tab. If you didn't land on the Insert tab, press the Right or Left arrow key until VoiceOver announces: 'Insert, tab, 2 of 8.' Press Control+Option+Spacebar to select the tab. Headings make text stand out and help people scan your document. The simplest way to add headings is with heading styles. Using heading styles means you can also quickly build a table of contents, reorganize your document, and reformat its design without having to manually change each heading's text. 2020-4-1 This tutorial shows how to create headings in Microsoft Word. More specifically, we’ll look at how to create headings using Word’s styles. Then, we’ll look at how to customize Word’s default heading styles to your preferred font, font size, alignment, and color. But first, let’s discuss the importance of using Word’s heading styles. I want to put the same header and footer format on each page, but insert different header and footer text for each page. I'm using Word 2011 for Mac.

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
- You create a Microsoft Word document that uses outline numbering for all headings.
- You create a cross-reference link to a heading.
- You create a new heading. To do this, you position the pointer at the beginning of the cross-referenced heading, and then you press Enter.
- After you create the new heading, you update all field codes.
In this scenario, the cross-reference link is not updated to reference the original heading. Instead, the cross-reference link references the new heading.
Cause
This problem occurs because, when you create a cross-reference link, a hidden bookmark is created at the beginning of the heading. When you split the heading, the bookmark does not move. When you update the cross-reference link, the link is not updated.

Workaround
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
Select the broken cross-reference, and then press Alt+F9. The field code is displayed for the REF field for the cross-reference. Note the bookmark name for the cross-reference. The bookmark name begins with the following string:
_Ref
Locate and select the outline numbered heading to which the cross-reference should point.
On the Insert tab, in the Links group, click Bookmark.
In the Bookmark dialog box, click to select the Hidden bookmarks check box.
Locate and then select the bookmark name that matches the bookmark name that you noted in step 1.
Click Add. The Bookmark dialog box closes.
Press Alt+F9 to hide field codes.
Locate the broken cross-reference.
Right-click the cross-reference link, and then click Update Field.
The cross-reference will correctly update the heading number to match the outline-numbered heading that the cross-reference references.
